Designer ShowcaseKurt GutmannKurt Gutmann, the son of a banker in pre-war Germany, wanted to be a jeweler instead of following in his father’s foot steps as a banker. He worked hard to earn a rare and highly prized apprenticeship with the prestigious German jewelry company Giuseppe Knoll. Afterwards, he decided to concentrate on the Italian market, opening many new and successful fine jewelry accounts. When the totalitarian flames spread through Europe, Kurt first moved to Cuba, then New York, entering the U.S. Army. At the war's end, in 1945, he returned to Europe as an American citizen, where he renewed old acquaintances and was eager to import their high quality gold jewelry to the U.S. Although that is commonplace today, back then he was breaking new ground. Kurt Gutmann was highly successful and the company steadily grew. Since Kurt's retirement in 1982, it has continued its strong growth. Today, their product mix includes bracelets, necklaces, earrings and other gold accessories in 14k and 18k gold and some pieces with diamonds as well. However, after a five year employment with a prominent jewelry designer, he began to see jewelry as an alternate means of design expression. Aspiring to present his ideas to a larger audience, Sakamoto moved to Los Angeles in 1979 and created his own jewelry design company, Concept 1 - Sakamoto. Sakamoto describes himself as a minimalist, "My collections are partly sculptural and architectural in nature and, in either case, I like to keep the forms as simple as possible". He adopted the challenge to create jewelry where less is more, showing discipline to avoid ideas that are mostly decorative or ornamental in nature.
